At the far eastern end of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Sault Sainte Marie ("Sault" is pronounced "Soo") features a unique blend of commerce, history and outdoor recreation.

While the heavy snows and cold temperatures may keep you away in the winter (although the snowmobiling is great there), this region comes alive in the summertime, with easy access to two of the Great Lakes as well as many attractions in the town itself. Here are just a few of these sights.
At the heart of the city are the Soo Locks, the largest system of locks in the world. Once an important portage for moving furs from the Lake Superior region to Montreal and Quebec, the first major lock was constructed in the mid-1800's. Since then, literally millions of tons of shipping have passed through the Soo. The complex features the largest lock in the western hemisphere.
